Closeup of Phil and Nancy in May 2002

It is another gorgeous day on Orcas Island. Phil has gone to TN/KY for his family reunion and will return on Monday. I feel alone!! He has been such a great caregiver that I had a little panic attack when he left. When he returns, I have encouraged him to go on a long backpacking trip somewhere! He is going to do that. I am still far from back to normal (rabbit pace) and am still turtleing around. Sometimes I feel like I will be a turtle all my life. My doctors say I will be pretty much healed by November!!! Until then, I am to do what I can and no more. Energy comes and goes, but it is coming more than not. I have a big compression bandaged arm and breast and that is very very annoying and hot and bothersome. I do about 3 hours of exercise/massage each day. So, my healing is not fast enough for me, but I am healing. Thank you again for being my support team!! Love, Nancy

Yesterday I had my mammograms on both breasts and I have NO CANCER!!! Then I had my appointment with my medical oncologist and she said that I have lymphodema in my right breast and it needs to be treated to prevent further infections. Radiation did a lot of damage to my tissues and it messed up the lymph drainage. So, the good news is NO CANCER. The other news is the continued fatigue and the new lymphodema. I start therapy soon for the lymphodema. I asked my plastic surgeon about the fatigue....he said it is quite normal, I asked my oncology surgeon and he said it is quite normal and I asked my medical oncologist and she said it is quite normal. They all reminded me that I have been through alot in just one short year...my medical oncologist told me to be the turtle and go slow and easy and not try to be the rabbit and keep up with what I used to do. It is good to be home...we have tons of weeding to do, windows to wash, and house to clean. We still have to unpack suitcases and groceries. I am good for nothing!! Poor Phil...he is quite frustrated with me right now. I AM grateful that I don't have cancer, but I am soooooooooooooo tired and very very teary-eyed. Thanks for all your prayers and support during this adventurous year.

I am home..resting and taking time for me. My plastic surgeon and his team examined me thoroughly and found no infection, found clean and healing incisions, and pronounced all good. I do have some redness on my right breast and some temperature (hotness) so he gave me an antibiotic and told me when and how to start on it. I am to mark the red area with a sharpie and then watch the change. If it (the red area) gets bigger for 2 days I am supposed to start the new antibiotic and call him. So far all is well and the redness seems to be just a faint blush. I have my major appts with the oncology team and mammograms and blood draws at the end of the month. Phil flew back to VA and I will join him if I feel rested in two weeks. Otherwise, he will join me at the end of the month in Seattle. I miss John and Yang and Charlie (and most of all, Phil) but we made plans to stay there through the end of June. My friends here are really being supportive (bossy) and I love them for that. The dogs are full of love and giving me lots of it.

Had a good visit to SCCA yesterday. They found that the new large and very hard lump in my right breast is a sercoma....a cavity filled with either blood, lymph fluid or something else...all are benign. I will meet with my surgeon in about a month and he will decide whether to biopsy it or not. The possibility of it being a recurrence of the cancer is very unlikely. They also found several calcifications in my right breast and called them milk of calcium. They are nothing to worry about now, but they just wanted a baseline to keep watch. There are several of them. My medical oncologist said I am doing very well and said, "Go forth and live!" It was a wonderful day and it is a wonderful life!!! I am so very very grateful.

Love to you all.

Nancy

I have a cold and it just seems to be a cold. WOW!! I have something pretty ordinary. I love being commonplace, run-of-the-mill, normal, regular, average, and yes, even mundane. Let's hear it for the common snotty nose, sore throat, and cough!!!!

December 01, 2006 at 12:29 PM PST

I thought everyone knew that I had SD!

Spasmodic dysphonia (SD), a focal form of dystonia, is a neurological voice disorder that involves involuntary "spasms" of the vocal cords causing interruptions of speech and affecting the voice quality. SD can cause the voice to break up or to have a tight, strained, or strangled quality.

I had BOTOX injections for over 20 years every 4 months into the vocal cords to help the spasms...then I had the experimental Denervation-Reinnervation surgery which involves cutting the nerve to the affected vocal cords and re-innervating the muscles with another muscle to prevent muscle atrophy.

I almost forget I was part of that experimental medical research....in fact, I was one of the first patients to receive BOTOX injections.

We are back from our trip to VA and DC area to visit with John and Yang. I did it! We had a great visit and Thanksgiving and found out that we are going to be grandparents in March!! We stopped in Seattle and spent a day and part of a day with Paige. We sure had fun with all of them. I am feeling stronger each day but still have major bouts of fatigue. I tend to overdo because I feel so good and then have to deal with the fatigue. We are having some great stormy weather here and it is snowing right now! I am taking the investigational drugs for the 5 year hormone therapy and will soon start a new genetic testing study. I was asked today to be in a spasmodic dysphonia study. Man!!! They love to get ahold of someone like me! Whatever I can do for medical research is fine with me. Thanks again for all the cards, gifts, flowers, notes, and calls. I still need and appreciate them. Tears still flow freely...the snowflakes falling make me weep, the birds eating madrone berries make me cry, sad movies make me sob, listening to Christmas songs makes me cry.....let's just say that I am very grateful and touched by each and every little thing.

November 14, 2006 at 01:23 PM PST

I am feeling good, but I am also feeling the fatigue of the cancer and the cancer treatments, but I think I am "right on schedule". I have been resting and trying to regain my strength and think that I am ready to try a trip. So Phil and I are flying back to see our son John and his wife Yang. Even though we have talked to John frequently and emailed daily...it has still been hard not seeing them during this time dealing with cancer. So, we are going to DC/No.VA to spend a few days with them.

Hi fellow classmates:

Just an update on me.

I was diagnosed with breast cancer and have been under the care of Seattle Cancer Care Alliance, University of Washington Medical Center, and Fred Hutchinson Cancer Center.  I have had surgery and will begin radiation soon.  I was offered chemotherapy for six months and weighed the odds very carefully and finally decided not to do the chemo.  Surgery, radiation, and hormone therapy were not options.

I meet with my radiation oncologist tomorrow.  The six weeks of radiation will be followed by a five year hormone therapy.  I have been part of several clinical studies and trials and am excited to be under the care of such a fine team of excellent doctors.  If you want to check on my "updates" you can go to the CarePage provided to patients by Seattle Cancer Care Alliance.  You go to CarePages.com and sign in as a first time visitor.  Set up your own member name and password and then you may go to my page......the exact name of my page is: Nancyweatherspoon.

Hearing of Ted Wilson's death from cancer should remind all of us that cancer can strike at anytime.  We each need to remember to live each and every day to its fullest!

Hope everyone is well, happy, and enjoying life!!!

Subject: If you ordered Road to Awakening and got a message back that it was not available....

Dear friends and family,

I want to apologize to you if you ordered Road to Awakening and then had Amazon.com write to you and tell you that it was not available.  THE PROBLEM IS FIXED NOW.

Four people contacted me right away when that happened to him/her (including our son John) and I contacted my media person and she got it all straightened out.

YOU SHOULD  BE ABLE TO PLACE AN ORDER ONLINE WITH NO PROBLEM NOW.  IF YOU HAVE A PROBLEM, PLEASE EMAIL ME AND I CAN GET "MY PEOPLE" RIGHT ON IT AND FIX IT.

"Ingram, the wholesaler to Amazon.com, was temporarily out of stock of Road to Awakening while the printer fixed an issue with the cover.

From the books we received, I noticed that a little bit of your name was cut-off. Therefore, we had the cover designer move your name in a little and submitted the revised cover to the printer. There was temporary unavailability of Road to Awakening while the printer exchanged the files. It appears that your son placed the order at that time.

Road to Awakening is now available again through Ingram (for retailers to purchase). As I explained in my welcome e-mail (see excerpt below),online retailers should have availability to consumers one week after the Pub Date. The Pub  Date for Road to Awakening is February 15. Therefore, you should see availability on online retailers by February 22.

Pub Date - The Pub Date is the point at which a book is available to retailers to purchase. Within one week after the Pub Date, your book will be available for consumers to purchase on online retailers. Reunions will be available by special order in bookstores through Ingram. This is also an important date for your publicity campaign, because it is when your book is "released" and much of the publicity efforts are centered around it.

On another note, I have submitted the book description correction several times to BarnesandNoble.com, but the "addition" to the book description still remains. I will continue to submit the revision to them. I also submitted front and back cover images to BarnesandNoble.com which should appear in the next few days."

THANK YOU SO MUCH FOR SUPPORTING ME IN THIS VERY SCARY ADVENTURE.  IT IS THRILLING AND EXCITING, YET SCARY ALL AT THE SAME TIME.  I HOPE YOU BUY A BOOK AND LIKE THE BOOK.

LOVE, NANCY

Fellow classmates,

I will not be attending the birthday party in Tucson, but hope that all of you have a great time.

As for me, my schedule is filled right now with scary and wonderful experiences.  My first novel is being published and should be available to buy at Amazon and all bookstores by the end of November.  I am working with my editors, design teams, publisher, and media people and they are planning my schedule for the next two months.  I hope to have a book signing in Tucson......still have lots of family and friends there.  I feel totally blessed to have a great literary agent and a media team which is top notch!  I am anxious to see the book design and learn what the title will be!

I just had a photo shoot here at home on Sunday.  My first feeling of what is to come.

First question everyone is asking me:  What is the name of the book?

I don't know!  That has been the hardest part.   We now have a team of 12 working on the "right" title.

I hope the book is a success and that you all will buy and read it.  I will sign your copy, if you want.  It is a historical fiction book set in the 1950's.

Have fun at the party.

Nancy Adair Weatherspoon

Dear friends and family,

I am so impressed by this poem that I want to share it with you.

Love, Nancy

This poem has been circulating since 9/11/01.

It  has been kept alive and moving since 9/11.  In memory of all those who perished that morning; the passengers and the pilots on the United Air and AA flights, the workers in the World Trade Center and the Pentagon, and all the innocent bystanders.  Our prayers go out to the friends and families of the deceased.

IF I KNEW

If I knew it would be the last time
That I'd see you fall asleep,
I would tuck you in more tightly
and pray the Lord, your soul to keep.

If I knew it would be the last time
that I see you walk out the door,
I would give you a hug and kiss
and call you back for one more.

If I knew it would be the last time
I'd hear your voice lifted up in praise,
I would video tape each action and word,
so I could play them back day after day.

If I knew it would be the last time,
I could spare an extra minute
to stop and say "I love you,"
instead of assuming you would KNOW I do.

If I knew it would be the last time
I would be there to share your day,
Well I'm sure you'll have so many more! e,
so I can let just this one slip away.

For surely there's always tomorrow
to make up for an oversight,
and we always get a second chance
to make everything just right.

There will always be another day
to say "I love you,"
And certainly there's another chance
to say our "Anything I can do?"

But just in case I might be wrong,
and today is all I get,
I'd like to say how much I love you
and I hope we never forget.

Tomorrow is not promised to anyone,
young or old alike,
And today may be the last chance
you get to hold your loved one tight.

So if you're waiting for tomorrow,
why not do it today?
For if tomorrow never comes,
you'll surely regret the day,

That you didn't take that extra time
for a smile, a hug, or a kiss
and you were too busy to grant someone,
what turned out to be their one last wish.

So hold your loved ones close today,
and whisper in their ear,
Tell them how much you love them
and that y ou'll always hold them dear

Take time to say "I'm sorry,"
"Please forgive me," "Thank you," or "It's okay."
And if tomorrow never comes,
you'll have no regrets about today.

Subject:     Christmas letter to all of you from me
Date:         Sat, 20 Dec 2003 10:15:07 -0800
From:        Nancy Weatherspoon

Dear Friends,

Merry Christmas, 2003. My heart is overflowing with joy and all I can say is, “Dear Lord, thank you for this new house, thank you for the love you have shown to us, and thank you for our many many blessings. We thank you for one more Christmas and the opportunity to write greetings to friends and family.”

January 2003 found us packing up 39 years of married life and 25 years in one house.  What fun!!  We gave away most of our furniture and other stuff.  We even drove a rental truck across country to Denver and then to Virginia to deliver furniture and stuff to Paige and Chad and then to John and Yang.  It was Phil’s idea of fun and I must admit, it was.

My dear brother-in-law Larry Grim died in January and Phil and I went to Texas for his funeral.  Larry had asked Phil to sing at his service and Phil honored Larry.

Then back to Redding to tell our friends good-bye and Paige and Chad came to help us move to Orcas Island in northwest Washington.  It was quite an adventure.....the guys had to carry all the stuff down the hill to the house and trudge back up the hill to the U-Hauls.  It was cold and rainy and they did a great job.  Paige and I were in the house trying to put boxes out of the pathways.  Thank God for their help.

Phil and I unpacked and Phil built shelves in the pantry and a floor in the attic and we were ready for our first visitors.  Shar and Cassie came to visit and they loved the house.  Soon, we went back to Redding for a party, Cassie’s graduation, and the Relay for Life.  Back to Orcas where Paige and Chad brought their two dogs and their kayaks for a week’s vacation.  While they were here, my mom had a stroke and we flew to Tucson for her death and funeral.  She was one week shy of her 96th birthday and I miss her very very much.  Phil sang at her funeral and she would have been so happy about that.

After that we had a full summer with Phil hiking in the Sawtooths while the dogs and I camped out in Stanley, ID, then to visit with Phil’s family in KY, TN, and MO.  Back to Orcas and then we flew up to John and Yang’s in Virginia to help them with landscaping and planting trees.  Then to Denver to Paige and Chad’s to help with landscaping there.  Back to Orcas where our vets from Redding came and did a de-barking surgery on Nicolas.  In between all our travels, we have joined a wonderful church, made many friends, made plans for the garage/guest house we are having built and have started fixing up the attic into a writing space for me.  We have made  many  trips off island to visit friends and relatives, to pick up and drop off house guests at the Seattle airport, to see plays in San Francisco and to do shopping.

As for our kids: Yang and John are doing well and are trying to play more.  John works in a huge DC law firm using his neuropharmacological PhD and his intellectual property law degree.  He loves his challenging work.  Yang works for a new company just 10 minutes from their home.  Paige flies for United and loves  flying and her dog Denali.  Chad is preparing for a new career as a firefighter, and is excited about the prospect of beginning training with the West Metro (Denver) Fire Department soon.  They, too enjoy “playing”.  Ivan (Chad’s dog) is a big sweet huskie and a fun (and talkative) member of the family.  As for our own dogs, Mysch, our 16 year old border collie died before we moved here, but Nicolas and Max ( our two other border collies) are well and happy and love it here.

Phil is buying his new kayak and a double kayak for both of us.  He loves all the hiking here on the island.  He is busy managing our little forest here and doing the work on the attic. He sings in a men’s group and may join the Orcas Choral Society.  I am researching a new sailboat  to possibly serve as a fishing boat too.  Meanwhile, I am writing on my book and doing a lot of goofing off.

We have had many visitors and house guests here and we love that.  Fact is, we have had several repeaters so far.  Please consider coming to see us.  There is endless beauty and peace here. Thank you for being part of our lives and please share our new home with us.  Merry Christmas!!

I really enjoyed the pictures of the reunion.  Thanks so much for sharing them.

Just to let you know that we are moving to Orcas Island in Washington State.  It is a lifelong dream of mine to live right on the oceanfront and we found our dream waterfront house on Orcas.  It is in the San Juan Islands.  We fell in love with the island and the people there.  Look us up if any of you are up that way!   We are on Spring Point right next to Deer Harbor.

Thanks again for sharing the photos.
