Charlie and Ginny Jones 2008 Christmas Letter

Eva,

Thanks for checking in!  It is good to hear that you are still healthy and doing well.  Sorry to hear that your husband is in poor health.  We need to enjoy life while we have good health, of course, and it does not get any easier to have good health these days.  We tend to get more appreciative of contacts with old friends and memories, I think, and we are more likely to read letters and emails in detail when we get them.

We have many classmates to keep in touch with.  It seems we get more into it every 5 or 10 years as the reunion anniversaries come up.  If we can do a better job of keeping in touch, perhaps we will not be so dependent on hearing sad news to spur communications.  I suppose high school friends and memories are more easily faded, and other reunions and groups in our lives compete for our time.  High school was at least less complicated than what followed, and we were probably far more sensitive to the challenges of high school, even just getting along and trying to get through all the classes and whatever.  Seems like we went to a lot more football games and basketball games, but then we band members were part of the show.

Yes, we have grand kids, a 12 year old boy (Jasper) and an 8 year old girl (Chloe).  They were just here Thursday/Thanksgiving, playing with the electric trains and the doll house, attractions kept special for them at grandma's house.  They are typical kids, keeping their parents going all the time with their various activities, making me tired even thinking about all that kids do these days.  They are definitely high tech, but also do horseback riding, fencing, gymnastics, drums, piano, and whatever.  Their mom, our oldest daughter Susan, has early stages of MS and had a bad episode of lupus last year, so was hospitalized for a couple weeks.  Our other daughter Jennifer is getting a PhD at Auburn University, working on political science and community development matters.  I even got to teach one of her classes about the kinds of government issues I see in the nuclear weapons and nuclear reactor business, basically the regulation and control of anything nuclear.

Ron and Jan are in Ontario, California,  have 2 boys and 5 grand kids.  They are still working and have no plans to retire that I know of.  Ron likes the tax season since he makes a few extra bucks helping people with their complicated tax forms.  I always have done my own taxes, but it is a hard job.

Wife Ginny is now a 7 year cancer survivor and still teaching, a reading specialist at an elementary school.  We live halfway between the college she went to, Hood College, and the Naval Academy, where I attended, so we are often found on one campus or the other.  We go to the Navy football home games and will be at the Army-Navy Football Game on December 6.  I am still working at the Department of Energy as a contractor, managing about 30 people who are responsible for screening all the Federal government documents to keep nuclear weapons secrets (mostly) out of the "Public Domain" which is a lot harder than it sounds.  Everyone that I work with has a Top Secret clearance, and we are looking to hire more nuclear experienced people.

Thanks again for the note.  Keep in touch!

Hi Charlie,

Just Me, Eva. Remember me?

Just wanted to say hi and see how you and your family are doing these days. Just got the email from Sherri about Joyce Herring. Was so sorry to hear about her. She was a real nice girl. I wonder how many of us is left. I guess we are not getting any younger though are     we? I turned 65 this year, but I feel pretty good for my age. and try to stay pretty active. I am still in Washington state. with my family. Our 2 boys are not married. Our oldest will be 30 in March, and the youngest will be 28 in December. I guess you have grandchildren don't you? I have great nieces and nephews, in fact, I have a great great nephew. They all live down in Arizona. I was down there last January. I flew down to visit my sister for a week. She is 80 years old now and is not in real good health.

Where are Ron and Jan now? Are they still in Colorado?

How is your wife doing?  What have you been doing to keep busy these days?

My husband is retired but not the kind of retirement he had hoped, you know like playing golf and all that good stuff like he had hoped he would be able to do. He is not able to do that because of his health. Oh well, such is life in the fast lane.

Well, when you have a few minutes to spare. Let me hear from you.

As Always,

October 14, 2007 -

The 45th Reunion is next weekend.  While Ginny and I will not be attending, we would like to share our East Coast Mini-Reunion with you.  We continue to meet Chuck and Judy Allen (Judy Liebeck) periodically, especially when Navy plays Air Force in football.  Below is a photo from Navy-Marine Corps Memorial Stadium in Annapolis.

Best to all for the 45th reunion!!

Charlie attended the 2002 reunion and sang tenor in Jan's Panther Singers Quintet, the entertainment for the Saturday night dinner.  He also read the Commencement Invocation that he wrote in 1962, which served as the blessing for dinner.  As webmaster, he presented Jan Vecchio (Jeannette Allen) with the Best Web Pages Award, which included a "certificate" and a three ring binder full of '62 website printouts.  Ginny had a great time at the reunion and got to see at lot of Tucson as well, some of which she packed into her suitcase!

Charles,

Thanks so much for the information.  I just now got a chance to sit down and read it - I really appreciate the time that you took.  I will sort through the list to be sure I don't double-email anyone (I've emailed a lot of the class of 1962).

Doris Messinger (class of '62) emailed me a scan of the dedication page from the yearbook which was great.  I printed that out already.  Another Amphi grad, Margaret Craven,  has her deceased brother's 1950 yearbook, but isn't sure that her neice will part with it.  She's checking for me.

I am so touched by all of the work everyone has gone to for me.  My friend, George C. (George B. Brotherton was the teacher at Amphi - and to whom the 1950 yearbook was dedicated and his father was George A.) will be equally appreciative of all of our efforts.

Thanks again, and I'll be in touch once I get my hands on one!

Dear Charlie,

Your Amphi 62 website is fantastic!  Really enjoyed browsing it. Wish our class would get one going. A. Mendez (64) told me about it, said it was interesting, he was right.

Hope you are well.

Nancy,

Yes.  I added a page for her at http://technidigm_DOT_org/contacts/whitemanm_DOT_html

She is now Mary Lee Erdman, husband David.  He seems to be interested in getting her reconnected with the class.

Hello again Charles,

Yes Mary Lee does have an e-mail address, it is; azsewlady_AT_theriver.com !!

Obviously I don't know if you remember her, but she was one of those that truly felt she was insignificant; as a lot of us did back then, but at any rate I know it would make her feel very good to have some communication from a classmate. I'm also a member of the class of "62",
but from Michigan; so we're all in the same age bracket. I wish I had known about your reunion; I had mine last June and really enjoyed it; it would've been nice for her to go. I think I can prompt her to go to the 45th if you have one.

Thanks again,

David Erdman

Joe,

Thanks for getting in touch.  Again, I need your mailing address so that I can send you a copy of the website (data file) CD and a copy of the reunion video tape.  I guess I was the only one who took any video pictures, so I thought I would send a copy to the 75 or so people for whom we have valid addresses.  Jan Vecchio and Ted Wilson are helping to make copies of the video.

Also, since I am also the ad hoc webmaster for the class reunion web pages, I am sending out a "souvenir" copy of what is on the web site as of now.  There is a lot of class and reunion info at http://technidigm_DOT_org/amphi62_DOT_htm.  I will continue to update the site as long as I am able to.

Note that I can cleanup and upload whatever pictures and info you would like to put on your page.  There are links to each person's individual page, and some are far more extensive than others.  The Reunion 2002 pictures are extensive, and there is also a bit of music for those who can download and play the audio files.

As for Vietnam, my hat is off to anyone who was in the Army, especially junior officer targets.  I had decided in 1962 to take an appointment to the Naval Academy rather than West Point just to avoid being in your shoes!

I was afloat in Tonkin Gulf for two deployments to Vietnam, aboard the nuclear carrier USS ENTERPRISE, operating the reactor plants but also "driving" that 90k ton ship as Officer of the Deck.  Would you believe the Big E drives like a sports car?  We had lots of flight ops and even encountered Russian Bear bombers doing recon of our carrier battle group on different occasions.  We also managed to blow up the flight deck during training off Pearl as we deployed in 1969, killing 27 guys.  It took us three months to repair the damage, cutting our second deployment down to about 4 months rather than 7.

The Navy experience set me up for nuclear power plant consulting, which I continue to do even today.

How close did you get to the war?  I assume your CE stands for Combat Engineers, but don't know for sure.

Regards,
Charlie

Hi gang!

Being one of the folks who are farthest away from Tucson, and thus less likely to be a candidate for heading up the reunion effort, I thought I would go ahead and ask who is actually volunteering to lead the effort and serve as Reunion Chairperson, or what is the process and protocol for getting the reunion staff organized.  Assuming that this has not been formally undertaken to date, we probably need to share our thoughts on that, perhaps delaying part of the process until we have contacted more people and have a more complete on-line and otherwise dialog with our classmates.  We might be able to do it as a cooperative committee of coordinators or something, listing tasks and letting people volunteer to do things as the time seems right.   At some point, to do a good job, we probably have to graduate from the informal "working on it" to the more formal "I'll take responsibility for that" frame of mind.  There is obviously no hurry at this point.  Feedback?

The list that I have on line and the links to individuals' pages are just a quick start, with no real planning or farsightedness.  I would like to do the same kind of pages for all those who have passed on, as well as for the rest of our classmates not yet listed, and some of the teachers.  With a gradual effort, collecting information on the internet  might reduce the amount of work
needed to document and distribute a reunion book, since it could be electronic, allowing anyone to print it out for those who prefer a hard copy.  Obviously, collections of email, while somewhat interesting, are not necessarily the kind of thing needed for a long term statement.  Also, of course, there is no reason why a separate book could not also be prepared and printed if someone wanted to undertake that, which is certainly a strong expectation based on the great things done in the past.  Comments?

The online version is not necessarily compatible with the traditional printed versions.  There are some issues with the images/pictures, since optimizing for a computer display is not the same as for a good printout.  Optimizing pictures for good print quality (600 dpi)  makes them larger and, if they were used for internet pages, would make it harder to load the pages (takes longer) and can be tiresome for people browsing the list.  I have already revised the initial set of black and white (line art) pictures (150 dpi and less) that I had up on the internet to a little more refined (gray scale, but also 150 dpi or less) that gives a close representation of what we have in the yearbook, including the paper grain or mat.  Fortunately, the gray scale refinement does not increase the image file size necessarily.  I am still learning about all all of this, but I am confident that a good printed version would require larger image files, so would not presume that what goes on the internet would help much if someone were interested in doing a real 40th reunion book.  Perhaps someone knows more about these things than I do.  Any ideas?

I think one of the next steps in this process is to start sending cards or letters (regular mail) to all of the addresses that we have to try to get the latest information and addresses on everyone, including email addresses.  I am not sure who has the latest info, but it is very likely to be Nancy, who has worked very hard on these things in the past.  Since I am semi-retired between my consulting jobs, I am inclined to just start doing the letter sending thing, but would like to involve as many people as possible and make it a fun project.  Thus, I will hold back on that until we collect ideas and motivated volunteers and workers to pick up that project.   Hum de dum....

The http://technidigm_DOT_org/amphi62_DOT_htm page also has a link to the reunion40_AT_technidigm_DOT_org" coordination folks, which I have tentatively (pending clarifications by these individuals of their desires) limited to myself, Nancy, Vicki, Joanne, and Suzanne.  I assume that there are others who would like to help in the "inner sanctum" and that some really might not have the time or inclination, either now or perhaps in the future.  At least, the separate list allows us to avoid bothering the entire class with routine admin while allowing us a shortcut email address for those who would like to use it.  The reunion coordinator remailer list on the server looks like this right now:
[reunion40: "Nancy Hillhoue Ruhl (Ron)" <ron_DOT_nancy_AT_gateway_DOT_net>, "Charlie Jones" <charlie_AT_Technidigm_DOT_org>, "Joanne Barreca" <joanne_barreca_AT_hq_DOT_dla_DOT_mil>, "Suzanne (Fuhn) Johnson" <sjohnson_AT_cncdsl_DOT_com>, "Vicki Lane Wilson Delaney" peg4profit_AT_email_DOT_msn_DOT_com>]  I have sent this email to both the class list and the reunion40 list, so these folks should might get two copies of this message unless the server filters out the duplications, which is possible.

Please let me know what changes you would like to make to these lists and any other feedback.

Ta, ta -- have a fun week, and remember:  If you are not having fun, you are probably not doing it right!

Subject: Re: Hi Joanne!

Joanne,

I am right here in Germantown, MD, where I have been since 1981.  I am just doing nuclear power plant inspections for nuclear power plant utilities and the Nuclear Regulatory Commission these days. I stopped full time work about 5 years ago and just work when I am needed for an inspection.  Gives me lots of free time in between jobs, which I spend either doing church things or playing with my internet web site.

Thought I would send email to some of the classmates listed at classmates.com and try to figure out a few more.  Too bad our 30th reunion was just before everyone started getting online!  I am going to try to keep up an info page on my web site so people can send me info and also link to emails and whatever I can come up with.  I will try to ensure that the info is validated and up to date.

Hope you do not mind if I put correspondence such as this on the internet for others to see.  I think it would help bring people together and encourage communications.  Is the peg4profit email address Vicki's?  I am making that assumption, based on your addees and what you said about Vicki and Suzanne.

If anyone wants to send me additional info, a resume, or a picture, I will see if I can link that to the info page. Probably need to start collecting current addresses for snail mail, which I can put on the web site too.  We will need to update the "In Memorium" list, of course.  Wonder if anyone else has started the same kind of internet effort?  I will be able to do a generic email address so that everyone on my list can get email from a single list address, such as.  Maybe later today.

Keep in touch.  Let us know what is going on in your life and maybe we can rekindle some of those alma mater feelings.  The '92 reunion committee did such a good job, I am sure that it will be difficult to match it, but who knows.  Maybe people get more nostalgic as they get older?  Let me know if there is anything I can do for the reunion effort.
