Our extraordinary, courageous and loving father, grandfather and great-grandfather entered God's heavenly peace on July 5, 2003. Jack F. Combs filled the lives of his family with his unique goodness, caring, honor and generosity. John Franklin Combs was born on August 17, 1924 in Patagonia, Arizona, the son of John Franklin Combs and Isabel Tapia Combs. His senior year he won a basketball and baseball scholarship to the University of Arizona.

As a U of A student, Jack was a member of the U of A Wildcat Basketball Team (1943 -1944). Jack Combs served in the Navy during WW II. In 1946 he married his first love, Sophie Singaris. He graduated from the U of A and began his 34 year teaching career. He was a biology teacher at Amphitheater High and he was the Science Department Chairman at Canyon Del Oro High from 1966 to 1983.

He was nominated for Arizona Teacher Of The Year by the Canyon del Oro faculty. Jack retired in 1983, having enjoyed great popularity as a high school teacher. Jack founded Combs Entomology Consulting Services in 1949. His career as an entomologist spanned 53 years. Jack was a college and high school referee for the WAC and Border Conferences, along with his friend, Gordon. He was inducted into the Pima County Sports Hall of Fame in 1994.

Our father, Jack Combs, was extremely ethical and a magnificent husband, father and grandfather. He embodied every Christian moral value. He steadfastly cared for both his wife, Sophie, and his youngest daughter, Nancy through long, debilitating illnesses. John Combs was preceded in death by his wife of 56 years, Sophie, and by his daughter, Nancy. Two devoted daughters survive Jack; they are Sally Combs and Kathy Combs. He is also survived by beloved grandchildren, Kristin Snow (husband, Eric) and Jack Combs-Martineau, and also, great-grandchild, Zoe Ann Snow. Other surviving family members include: brother, Alfred Combs, family members: Ana Martinez and Arnulfo and Carmen Verdugo, Richard and Thelma Nelson.  He was preceded in death by brother, William Combs. Jack is also survived by his best friend, Gordon. Services will be held Saturday, July 12th, at 12:00 noon at The University Newman Catholic Center, 1615 East 2nd.
