From the Family:

Uncle Buddy drove to Phoenix in late March to meet the family for lunch at Bill Johnson’s Big Apple where we celebrated his 65th birthday. He returned to Tucson early because he was not feeling well. Three days later he was in a accident with his truck and three days after that suffered a fall which led to an ambulance ride to the VA Hospital in Tucson.

He spent a over a week in ICU during which he was in a Medically induced coma due to asthma, extremely high blood sugar, and then had kidney failure leading to dialysis. He appeared to be rebounding and was transferred to a step down unit until he had a severe bleeding episode. He was given almost 30 pints of blood, multiple blood products, and volumes of IV fluids and medication. A 4cm ulcer was then discovered, as he had childhood history of ulcers. Surgical options were presented to him and the family which included removal of portions of the stomach and transverse colon resulting in a colostomy bag and near daily dialysis along with being in a wheel chair and nursing home for the remainder of his life. Anyone who knows “Bud” would understand why he said “HELL NO” to those options and refused the surgery. Tough though it may be, we chose to honor and respect those wishes.

My mother (sister Sally from Phoenix) and I (niece Celeste from San Diego) were with him in ICU and hospice around the clock at his bedside talking, feeding, supporting and just “being” with him. My dad went back and forth from Phoenix, working and caring for their three dogs and my cat. Dan and Ann, very good friends, visited Uncle Buddy spending an entire day in ICU and bringing awesome Chinese food to nurture the family which was all very much appreciated.

A donation of his remains to Life Legacy was made which will further medical studies and help save lives which will be followed by cremation. There will be no official service, however a memorial & luncheon will be held in Phoenix on Sunday, 26th April, 2009 at 2pm. Though it is short notice, anyone wishing to attend can leave a number or email and we will contact you ASAP.

While we are profoundly saddened by this loss and will miss Uncle Buddy very much, we are comforted by the fact that he was aware of his circumstances, made a clear choice and left this earth the strong stalk he was since the time he was born. He also received the “Right of Passage” (last rights) from Father David whom called in all the Arch Angels for him. The care and treatment he received by the VA doctors, nurses and entire staff was, with few exceptions, very caring, and supportive. The hospice staff took great care of him and the family - they fell in love with his dog Sandy and even offered to adopt her should the need arise.

We are deeply grateful to Gene, who has not only been the landlord, but has been a friend and confidant for almost two decades. He has also been delivering food to the family during these difficult days. We count him among one of the Angels God has put on earth who gave the gift of love to our loved one. Thank you Gene.

We will respond to anyone who wishes to communicate with the family if you leave contact info. on this site.
