I thank you all so much.  Please keep forwarding responses to me for Phoebe Pack, Charlie.  This has opened quite a mystery, as follows:

Arthur Pack, Nature Magazine Editor, Ghost Ranch founder, and philanthropist had been married in NJ prior to moving west.  He and Eleanor Brown had three children according to various web genealogies: Charles Lathrop Pack, Vernon Pack, and Margaret Pack nee Bahti, who would have been the second wife to the founder of Bahti Indian Arts on Campbell St. in Tucson and in Santa Fe.  His son Mark Bahti, my age, 57 now runs it.  Margaret was born in NJ in 1927, the youngest of the three kids from Arthur's first marriage.

Then Phoebe Katherine Finley of Portland, the genealogy I'm working on for myself and for Portland Audubon Society went to stay at Ghost Ranch, NM with Pack who was by then divorced, in 1936 and married him.  Until now, I found no evidence of any natural children for Phoebe, and thus only the older Pack children you wouldn't have known.  I believe you all were born abt. 1944, as I'm 1950 and having 40th HS Reunion this yr (am on the Committee even.) class of 1968.  So your several replies tell me Phoebe Irene was your age and must have been a natural born daughter to Arthur and second wife Phoebe Katherine (Finley) of Portland around 1945 when same was 38 yrs old (born 1907, Portland).

I plan to be contacting some of the other Finley family members, children of Phoebe K.'s brother William, Jr. born 1908.. he had four.  So I can probably eventually solve this, however I didn't want to bother the family until I have an invitation for them to an event I will plan, a gathering for William L. Finley's memory.  He was a great conservationist in the west under Pres. Theodore Roosevelt's admin.. and our first State Game Warden here, and very much more.

Finally, I will mention again that the first Ghost Ranch was near Santa Fe, NM; then the Pack's moved to Tucson later and started the one lodge your Tucson classmates know.. and also that Phoebe I. Pack's middle name Irene is for William L. Finley's wife (her grandmother?) Nellie Irene Barnhart who went by Irene, and was William's full-time bird photography and adventuring partner after 1908. He had an earlier boyhood friend photo partner.  Finley published "American Birds" with Scribner and Sons of NY in 1907, the year Phoebe K. was born.

Hope I'm not bothering you too much.. I didn't mean to go so far into it with you.  Forgive me.  Now I won't feel the need to fill you in again.

Thank you very much Charlie,

I also received a reply from Betsy Bond Bounds no doubt thanks to you.  She did not mention knowing any relationship to the school however.. but maybe another classmate will come through.  Could very well be that Phoebe Pack, who was born in 1907 on land I recently purchased here was a benefactor to the school and was therefore remembered, or perhaps a classmate of yours had a special fondness for her.  At any rate thanks very much.  Also, I did order up a copy of Phoebe Pack's obituary from the Arizona Daily Star, and could copy it to you if you  become curious.

Charles, there was a Phoebe Pack that was in our graduating class, I had some classes with her.  Her father owned the Ghost Ranch Lodge here in Tucson on Miracle Mile and Fairview, but it has been closed for quite some time. There is also an Arthur Pack Golf Course and Park and he also helped found the Desert Museum.  I don't know anymore than that.

Charlie,

As I recall, Phoebe was the daughter of the Pack family that owned Ghost Ranch Lodge while we were in high school.

Mr. Berliner,

I have no additional knowledge of Phoebe Pack, although I do remember her from high school days.

I am forwarding this to other classmates in case they have any additional information.

Our graduation yearbook indicates she was active in chorus.

Best regards,
Charlie Jones

re: Phoebe Irene Pack

Dear Mr. Jones,

May I ask for your help in researching an AMPHI High "connection," of a historic family here in Oregon?  I was tracing a lead on Phoebe Irene Pack (born Phoebe Finley here in Portland area in 1907) which led me to your Amphitheater High School Reunion page, where she's listed as "In Memorium" near the bottom of page.  I'm doing my research in conjunction with Audubon Society of Portland, or which Ms. Pack's well-known father was the first President beginning in 1906.  I would guess she was some sort of benefactor or friend to the school, but perhaps you could fill me in with some more detail from your own recall, of her connection with the school, or any other recollections that come to mind of her civic or family associations in the Tucson area.

Thanks very much, and I hope this is of little bother.

By the way, I'm on my own class's 40th Reunion Committee for this year, 2008 (class of 1968, Reynolds High).
If you have the interest you may like to visit my bird photography web sites, as well as to confirm my legitimate interest in Ms. Pack's roots. :
