I am always happy to hear that there is interest in another reunion (of
any
kind) for our class. I even attend my brother's Amphi reunion
events
(class of '53). They are so much fun, too.
I would do what I could to help. I enjoy calling people, etc.,
but I
don't care to explore where to have the event, etc. I have kept
in touch
with several of our group from Helen Keeling all the way through Amphi
High
(where I currently teach 9th grade English). Let me know what is
decided,
and I will see what I can do to help.
My mother died suddenly in July, so this is not a particularly happy
season for
my family. I miss her terribly, but she was still driving,
exercising--active and healthy until the last three weeks of her almost
92
years, so I am thankful for that.
Be well. Happy holidays to all of us. Life is precious and,
sometimes, shorter than we expect, so let's make the most of our time
with
those of us who are interested in meeting.
Much love,
Sherri (Zeller)

Dear Charlie,
After three weeks
of
vacationing and driving, I am on my way home from Bellingham, WA.
I did not
get to see Nancy Adair on Orcas Island, but I did visit Buddy Currier
in
Bellingham. He is such a nice guy, still, and he is as good
looking as
ever!
I sent Eva Adcock
Riley (who
lives in Shelton, WA) a copy of our reunion tape. I hope she
received it
by now.
Love,
Sherri (in San
Francisco
until tomorrow a.m.)

Dear Charlie,
Hope you have a great time in San Diego. I will be there Monday night, if all goes according to plan. It will be my first night on the road, and I will stop in Ocean Beach to see my daughter Taren.
I had a delightful dinner with Mr. and Mrs. Marshall. They are very well and remain active physically and mentally. They mentioned that Janet and Bill had sent them photos from the last reunion. I meant to take my reunion photos with me, but I forgot. I will do it next time. I promised that my sister and I will take them out to dine when I return form Seattle in July.
I will share with you that I have been teaching for Amphi in one form or another since my return to Tucson in 1987. I began with and enjoy subbing, but the various schools began offering me permanent sub positions in the area of "special needs children", and frequently, the jobs turned into full-year, contract jobs. I decided to complete the coursework to acquire special education certification, and I finished the last course and papers in April of this year. I take the state exam for cross categorical sp. ed. on Sat., 6/7. I have been teaching special education 6th, 7th, and 8th grade language arts and general ed. reading at La Cima Middle School for the 2002-03 school year, which just ended on May 30. I found this teaching year especially difficult due to the age and behaviors of middle school students. I am used to and prefer high school students, but I agreed to continue teaching at La Cima in August. In addition, La Cima busses in students from the lowest academic and socio-economic areas of Amphi District, and it really impacts the school population in a way that I have never before experienced. We have such a high concentration of poor readers--some with bilingual difficulties and most with deprivation in all areas that you can name. I feel like a juvenile probation officer again, and many of my 6th, 7th, and 8th grade students are, in fact, on probation or involved in some way with the juvenile court. We have a resident probation officer and a resident sheriff's deputy on site. Kind of unsettling when you consider that these are 11, 12, and 13 year olds, and they are already "in trouble" with the law. Many of their parents are in jail, prison, or deceased, so I meet a lot of grandparents, aunts/uncles, and foster care guardians. It is most depressing. I would love to say that the rewards are great in working with this population, but I don't feel that way-- yet. I guess I must have hope for them, or I wouldn't stick with it!
My own immediate family is well. My mother is 89, still driving, and lives in the same house on Glenn St. Hope she can remain as active as she is forever. I see her almost daily. My sister Debbie lives fairly close to my mother's house and to my house, so I see her often. She and her husband just returned from a Silver Seas Cruise (sort of a delayed honeymoon) to Spain, France, and Italy. They loved Corsica the most.
My oldest son Randy (38), his wife Claire, and their two-and-a-half-year-old daugher Olivia reside in Seattle. Randy is an accountant for a contstruction firm based in Honolulu, so he flies to Hawaii quite regularly.
My son Ryan (35) lives in Bellingham (90 miles north of Seattle, for those who may not know of Bellingham). He and Randy are surrounded with lots of green trees and lakes and prefer that to Tucson, where they were born. Ryan is an artist and a welder (frequently, combining both talents). He is also a super auto mechanic like my father was.
As I indicated, Taren (27) lives in Ocean Beach. She is an actress and jazz singer, but supports herself working with autistic children and their families. She is a great animal lover and involves herself with animal rights' activities.
My daughter Blake (25) graduated from Rhode Island School of Design two years ago with a degree in photography. She returned to Tucson about a year ago. She currently has photos displayed at the Tucson Museum of Art, and I attended the opening last Friday. Only 40 artists were selected from over 1,000 entrants to display, so I am most proud of her accomplishment. She also has an opening on 6/7 at a downtown gallery called Metroform, and I plan to attend that (assuming I am not devastated by the state exam I have earlier in the day!).
I still enjoy traveling as much as I can. I was in the former Soviet Union for three weeks in 1989 when Gorbachev was still in power. It was a great trip, and Siberia was one of my favorite areas to see. I walked in many of the same buildings that President Bush just visited, and I have great photos from my experiences in Moscow and St. Petersburg (Leningrad, then), and Kurgan. I have been to Iguazu Falls in Argentina and Brazil, and passed through Paraguay to get there. I loved Buenos Aires and am glad that I visted there when I did. Tourist safety was not a problem there as it is now, due to the failing economy. I have been to New Zealand and Australia, and I want to return to Queensland, which I dearly enjoyed. I am not enamored with Mexico, but I enjoyed Guadalajara and La Paz. I was in Toronto some years ago and stayed in the same hotel as the Dali Lama, and seeing him was a major thrill, as was seeing the "Phantom of the Opera" for the first time. Since then, I have seen the play in LA, NY, and London--no longer such a major thrill. A few years ago, my daughter Taren and I spent two weeks driving all around Ireland, and that was truly a delightful journey. We visited and/or stayed in old castles and soaked up all of the beauty of the people we met and the places we visited. Ireland is high on my list of countries to revisit. I have been to England and European countries often since 1983. I have good friends in France, and I may be attending a wedding in Aix at the end of July.
So you see, I do keep occupied. No husband or significant other in my life. My significant "others" are my children, granddaughter, mother, sister and her new husband, my brother and his family, and my deceased brother Buddy's sons, as well as my dear, dear friends, who keep me inspired and laughing (and sometimes crying). I have had too many steady losses through death for the last five years of friends and family, and I hope that diminishes soon. I guess it is part of reaching the age we are now, but I don't much like the reality. Truth is, I guess I am a dreamer not a realist down deep in my heart.
Keep in touch as you can. I
will
continue to contact and keep the news line open. Trust you to do
the
same.
Love,
Sherri
Sherri,
Thanks for all the news. You
seem to be in
an ideal position to connect with teachers as well as classmates.
Perhaps
you can share some of your own history or experiences as well.
I am in San Diego this week for a
nuclear power
conference. I will have to wait until next week to update
the web
site with all the news on classmates and teachers. Have fun at
the '73
reunion!

Dear Charlie,
Joe Hardy and I had a great lunch. He has really done well in his life. He has a wonderful and solid marriage, two handsome sons, remains close to his brothers, and has a beautiful office and a successful business. His enthusiasm for life is almost contagious. What a super guy!
I had a lovely email from Nancy Adair. I hope I can see her during my time in the Seattle area. Thanks to the internet and this emailing "thing" (that I now am dependent on), I am able to keep in touch with dear and old friends quite easily.
Tom Wiley asked for info on Mr. Marshall. I provided the street address, and will ask Mr. M if I can give out his phone number.
I also heard from Larry Vance and Rick Mellinger. They both are successful and content in their lives, and that makes me feel good for them. I am sorry to have learned that Rick's father recently passed away. I do know the grief associated with that event, and my heart goes out to him and his family.
I am attending my baby sister Debbie's 30 year reunion (Amphi, 1973) activities on Friday. It will be fun to see her former classmates. I really do remember when many of them were born--and, I taught some of them in the late sixties at Amphi.
Keep in touch.

Charlie,
I just received a lovely email from Roger Shelton about Mr. Wilson. He mentioned my father, as well. My mother is still friends with Roger's older sister Peggy and her husband Bob Lee. This is what I love about the Amphi community of yesteryear. We still have great connections and affection for each other.
I called Mr. Marshall and Helen Jo this morning. I hope to see them before I drive to Seattle on Sunday or Monday. He assured me that they are well, and he knew about the deaths of his colleagues and informed me about Mr. Hal Waite's death. Hal's mother and my mother were close friends. I think they might have been DeMolay mothers together in their younger days. I know the Waites attended the same Episcopal church that we did.
I have recently spoken with Mr. Lomaglio's son Sam, and he said that his father is doing OK since he had colon cancer, but that he is suffering from Alzheimer's or some form of dementia. I especially hold Monsieur in high regard. He was my supervising teacher when I student taught for him at CDO in 1967, and I try to talk with him and his wife at least once a year. He is the reason I majored in Russian and French and studied Spanish (all three of which he speaks, as well as Italian). My sister also was inspired by him and has studied all four of the above languages!
No doubt about it--we had the privilege of being taught by absolutely the VERY BEST!
I am having lunch with Joe Hardy tomorrow. We have not done the "lunch thing" for many years, so it will be a fun visit.
Thanks again for all the networking you do to keep us informed.
Love,
Sherri

My mother and I attended Mr. Wilson's memorial service. It was touching and beautiful. His sons (and one other male whom I did not recognize) played the most moving salute to him. I cried not for Mr. Wilson, but for his grandson Zack who could not contain himself. I love Zack and have known him since birth. He is Karen and David's son, and he has three little children of his own now. I told Zack's brother Reid that the greatest tribute they could give their grandfather was to turn out to be as good and loving a human being as their grandfather was. Mr. Wilson and my father are men cast from the same mold. They gave of themselves completely to mankind. They wanted nothing in return but the pleasure of knowing they might be passing along some humanity, and that was enough. I loved it when Zack commented to us that there was much more to his grandfather than the music he loved and taught. I feel the same about my father and his being a mechanic. He did a lot more than repair vehicles--he repaired souls. Mr. Wilson did that, too. Men like that are few and far between. I am afraid that with the passing of these men, a passing of a generation never to be born again has occurred. Therein lies my greatest sadness.
I am sorry about Mr. Heslip. I adored him, although I did not know him as well as my family did the Wilsons. Shea was wonderful to me when I first taught at Amphi in 1968. He was such a "handsome brute"--sort of like the Brawny lumberjack type of guy. I do not read the obituaries, and I am glad that I have good friends and classmates who keep me informed.
Thanks for all that you have done to keep us together.

Strange. On Monday, my mother and I were talking about Larry Wilson Sr. He was my brother Buddy's (Buddy died almost two years ago at age 68) band teacher, but Mr. Wilson was also a customer at my father's garage. His son Larry and I share the same birthday, and his son David was married to Karen, who was a probation officer with me in the early seventies. I have known David and Karen's sons Zack (graduated with my daughter Taren, 27, from Amphi) and Reid (one of my students when I taught at Amphi) since they were born.
Thanks for the notice. I don't read the obituaries often anymore--too depressing. I wil call my mother after I get to work to tell her. She does not get the newspaper.

Thanks for the note. We had a hard time finding the right spot in Reid Park, too. Next time we will have to have maps!
Jan led us in another one of her songs, and Roger Shelton from '63 was there. Everyone had already eaten, so all we had was cake -- a nice Amphi '62 decorated cake.
Ginny and I had a great time. You are right -- it is a good group. Sorry we did not get to chat, but I should tell you that you looked young and pretty as ever. How do you do that?

There is a group of us from Helen Keeling, as I am sure I have shared with you, that still feels a kinship. We remained together 1st through high school/college, and that group includes Glenn, Dan Torrey, Don Bridges, Linda King, Sue Ellen Stibbe, Susan Ricketts (although she came into our group in 4th grade, I believe), Jane Craven (killed in college), Mike Truskey, George Lind, and many others. I have always felt much affection for these people, and I have remained close to Sue Ellen and to Susan Ricketts. I hope word of the reunion has gotten out to these old friends. I have tried to spread the word as much as I can.

My mother and I attended Rip's memorial service yesterday. Rip was a family friend, a customer of my father's, and a teacher to me and my siblings. It was a lovely tribute, and I saw Bobby Nichols there, as well as several other Amphi friends of my brothers and sister.
I went to Putney's on Fri., but I did not stay long as the cigarette smoke and smell of booze bothers me. I saw Dean Metz and several others, and I signed the memorial book. The principal of the school where I teach was there, and I did not know that he would even have known Rip, so that was interesting.
I'll probably see Nancy Ruhl today, as I am attending a Ruhl family function with Nancy's brother-in-law Larry later in the day.

Sherri,
I lived in Bremerton (Port Orchard) in 1976 while assigned to a Navy ship in the shipyard. Eva was in the band, also a trumpet player, so I remember her quite well. She has some emails on the Amphi 62 web page linked to her name on the class list. Her e-mailbox has been full lately, so I am a little concerned that she may not have heard the latest.
I think you are right. It will be a great time to get together!

Smuggler's Inn or the Viscount are

The time is fast approaching for
our 40th
reunion, and I have done little or
nothing to explore whether we should
or will
have one if I am in charge! I
have suggested before that someone
else may be
better chosen to direct it, as
I have very limited computer skills
(with no
interest in expanding them)
regarding mailings, labels, lists,
etc. I
don't want to be to blame if
things do not materialize for a
reunion, but I
fear I will be unless I have
assistance or replacement. I am
more than
happy to do what I am told , but
still wonder if someone with better
technological computer skills should be
in charge???
Do you think we should even have a
reunion? If so, how can I find out how
many are interested, and how many
would
attend? I would need to secure a
date, time, and place, and all that
takes
planning. I attended the class of
'61's reunion at Tucson Nat'l, and it
was a
lovely facility. I think we must
agree on a month that would be
comfortable
weather-wise for those who no
longer are accustomed to the heat of
the summer,
etc., and then I will start
calling about availability and prices.
Suggestions will be appreciated,
Sherri (Student Body Secretary!!!)

Dear Charlie,
Just read your neat note. Funny
that you
mentioned Port Orchard. One of the artists with whom I stayed
during my
Seattle visit has just bought a house in and is in the process of
moving to
Port Orchard as I write. I have never been there, but I know I
will in
the future when I visit her again.
Your family sounds wonderful. My 22 year old daughter Blake (graduate of Annie Wright School in Tacoma), who is a student at RISD in Providence, happened to be in Seattle when I was there, and we spent some quality time together. She confided in me that she and her boyfriend Christian (born in Walpole, Mass.) are engaged. I think she is afraid to tell her father in fear that he will not finish financing her education at RISD! She plans to graduate in May/01.
Taren, my 24 year old daughter (graduate of Amphi) lives with me in Tucson. She hated the U of A, but I hope she returns for her senior year. She took a break from there over a year ago and works for a "Nanny" agency. She has been with a family (both parents are physicians) for over one year and loves caring for them. She makes better money with them than I do teaching, but I wish she would finish her degree in Theater Arts. She acts and sings locally.
My son Randy (an accountant with Merrill Gardens) in Seattle and his wife Claire (an artist) are the ones who will be making me a grandmother. (Randy is the only one of my children who is married.) My first husband Bob Gibson flew to Seattle while I was there, and we celebrated Randy's 35th birthday on July 5 with him and his wife by spending the day on Bainbridge Island.
Our other son Ryan, 32, lives in Bellingham, and we spent time with him also. He is a welder/artist there. He is the least settled of my four children, and he reminds me of my father in so many ways.
My father is 89 and has Alzheimer's now. My mother is 85 and in great mental and physical health. They have been married 68 years. I see them daily.
Thanks for your newsy (newsey??) message. I love e-mail!

Sherri,
Thanks for the note. Those of us in the band remember Ron quite well. You really go back to the early 50s on that. Quiet and friendly guy. Still am not sure of the details on this, but I have just renewed my Weight Watchers and jogging fervor to keep the ticker ticking.
Congrats on being a GM for the first time. I am anticipating being a GF for the second time in a couple of weeks, via oldest daughter (Susan; iVillage.com VP ) and her husband (Sean; Lucent techie), a sister for 3 year old Jasper. They live only 4 hours away, in New Jersey. When I was in the Navy, we lived across from Seattle in Port Orchard (1976/7) so that I could work on the nuclear powered ships in the Bremerton shipyard. Rained for the year we were there!
BTW, my youngest daughter (Jennifer; school counselor) and her husband (Marty; ambulance seller) just got back from a 7/4 vacation to Las Vegas and the Grand Canyon. I had to do some travel research for them to help them get ready. Wanted to set them up to visit our Las Vegas classmates, but they were (of course) too shy for any of that. Wife Ginny (elem school reading specialist) and I just went to the beach (NC) but spent most of the time repairing the beach house rather than lounging on the beach. Getting ready for the next round of hurricanes.
Again, thanks for the note, and keep those Amphi Students on the ball!
Best regards,
Charlie

Dear Charlie,
I was especially sad to learn of Ron
Rife's death. He and I went dancing partners in a skit at
Helen
Keeling in 4th or 5th grade. We were in school together since
first grade
with Mrs. Shires, I think.
I just returned Friday from two weeks in Seattle/Bellingham. I leave this afternoon for the Grand Canyon for a couple of days. After that, I should remain home for awhile. I am going to be a grandmother for the first time in early December, so I know I will be in Seattle again for that event!
I'll be teaching at Amphi again
when school
starts again in about four weeks. The summer has gone by so
quickly--once
again!

the basics. Come to think of it, perhaps it would not hurt to
reinforce
that thought. For example, I have actually been able to win
multi-million
dollar contracts simply because my proposal was better written than the
one
submitted by the competition. Computers help with the spelling
and even
the grammar, but they
can not help you make good sense or
be
convincing and well organized. Companies spend tens of thousands
of
dollars just writing proposals to try to get work, usually on
relatively short
deadlines.
Things to do in support of our 40th reunion? Perhaps you could get the school web master to link the Amphi internet web site to our list. We will eventually want to have updates on former teachers and their pictures, especially for those who may be still around. You might also check out whatever the other classes do to coordinate reunion information with the school, but you probably already know a lot about that if you have the "stuff."
Yes, you are definitely in charge since you have the "stuff" and since you are smart enough not to want the job in the first place! Seriously, I do not think we need to do much systematic organizing for a year or so, and by then it may be just a matter of selecting the path of least resistance. Nevertheless, since you are right at the heart of things at the school, I am sure we will be relying on your gracious help a lot.
I will start a page with your
name on it
and add emails, pictures and any other information that you would like
our
classmates to know about. If the reunion stash from Nancy
includes anything
recent, we might be able to put some of it on the web site as well, or
perhaps
just an inventory of
what you have.
Again, it is great to hear from you! Take care.

Dear Charlie,
I currently teach English at Amphi
High
School. If there is anything I can help you with in terms of info
or
photos, please let me know.
I do not know if I am "in charge" of the next reunion, but I do have some "stuff" Nancy Ruhl gave me when she gave up her role. I am not very good with computers, etc., so the job may be better served if someone else takes over the reunion plans.
I can be e-mailed at this or another address (szhcoeur AT aol.com)
Hope all is well with you and
yours.
Sincerely,
Sherri (Zeller) Hines
